Digital radiology techniques are set apart by the use of a computer-based image capture system. Animals, like humans, find it immensely uncomfortable to recover from invasive surgical procedures. And unfortunately, unlike humans, animals seldom understand why they have been submitted to what in their mind likely amounts to torture. In addition, many animals must remain under heavy sedation for some time, or wear awkward restraining devices to prevent them from contaminating their incision site, or to prevent them from tearing their sutures. All of the above presents a significant emotional and physical burden placed on the animal and their owner. Thankfully, innovations in veterinary endoscopy technology allows veterinary clinics to avoid more drastic forms of surgery, while often achieving the same results.

Endoscopy is a surgery technique that has revolutionized surgical procedures worldwide. In the realm of human medicine, it is known for transforming a plethora of what were once surgical procedures that require a hospital stay into outpatient procedures where a patient may go home within mere hours of a procedure. This surgical technique has been adapted (and in some cases, miniaturized) in order to accommodate use in veterinary surgical suites with the proper equipment.

The process of endoscopy (which literally means ?looking inside?) utilizes a thin, semi-rigid tube that is inserted either into a naturally-occurring bodily orifice, or a very small incision. In the latter case, the incision is barely larger than the diameter of the endoscope (the instrument used to execute the procedure). The endoscope utilizes fiber optics in order to allow the veterinarian to navigate through the body of the patient, by both illuminating the inside of the body, and transferring the image back to the operator. Additionally, the endoscope?s tube accommodates a variety of surgical manipulators for carrying out the procedure. This arrangement provides immense benefits when compared to traditional surgery techniques. For instance, endoscopic or laparoscopic spaying reduces what would be a 2-3 inch incision to a 1/8 to � inch incision, and reduces pain and recovery time by 65% or more.

Endoscopic techniques can be used to facilitate a wide variety of veterinary treatments. Arthroscopy, for instance, allows the veterinarian to view, diagnose, and treat issues within joints. Bronchoscopy is the technique that is used to examine the respiratory tract, remove foreign objects, and to detect and sample lesions or tumors. Cystoscopy allows treatment of the bladder, while gastrointestinal endoscopy addresses issues in the stomach and intestines. Laparoscopy allows the vet to view abdominal organs, and otoscopy allows examination of the ear canal, and middle ear (and is one of the most common procedures in veterinary medicine). Rhinoscopy is a technique for exploring and treating the nose and throat, and vaginoscopy is used to treat vaginal issues, as well as to enhance animal husbandry techniques.
